Explore Class 5 Concludes with a Transformative Journey Through Navajo Nation
Every leadership journey is grounded in a sense of place, and for Valley Leadership’s Explore Class 5, our final travel experience brought us to a region defined by its immense scale, rich heritage, and profound resilience. To wrap up an incredible year of learning, the cohort embarked on a powerful three-day journey through the Navajo Nation, the largest tribal nation in the United States.
It was an immersive experience deeply tied to our core themes of equity, adaptability, and interconnectedness, challenging our assumptions and illuminating the distinct strengths and realities of Indigenous leadership.
Day 1: Cultural Preservation and Purposeful Design
Our journey began at the STAR School, where we were warmly welcomed by Mark Sorensen. The cohort learned about the school’s unique, holistic approach to education, which seamlessly weaves together sustainability and cultural preservation. Participants toured the campus and visited a traditional female hogan, gaining invaluable insight into how Diné teachings, language, and cultural identity shape and elevate the educational experience. From there, we traveled to Twin Arrows, where Karl C. Jim guided us through the property. He highlighted how profound artwork, architecture, and cultural elements are intentionally woven throughout the resort to honor heritage while driving economic enterprise. The evening concluded with an exceptional dinner at Zenith Steakhouse, offering the cohort a welcome space to connect, digest the day’s insights, and reflect before the next day’s adventures.
Day 2: Entrepreneurship and Breathtaking Landscapes
On our second day, the focus shifted to economic innovation and the power of community-driven commerce. We traveled to Tuba City to visit Change Labs, an inspiring space dedicated to fostering local talent. Sophia Piestewa and three Native entrepreneurs shared their personal journeys of building businesses rooted deeply in culture, community, and purpose. Their stories painted a vivid picture of the entrepreneurial ecosystem within the Navajo Nation. While illuminating systemic hurdles, such as limited access to capital, infrastructure, and markets, their experiences demonstrated the immense creativity, determination, and deep cultural grounding that continue to drive modern innovation across the region.
Later that afternoon, the cohort experienced the breathtaking beauty of Monument Valley through a sunset jeep tour. It was a profound opportunity to connect directly with the land and reflect on the deep significance of place in shaping identity, history, and community.
Day 3: Community Innovation and Looking Forward
Our final day featured conversations with two remarkable leaders working to strengthen the future of Navajo Nation. Valentina Clitso of the Diné Ranchers Association shared the importance of preserving traditional ranching practices while creating sustainable opportunities for future generations. Vircynthia Charley of Navajo Tribal Utility Authority discussed the Light Up Navajo initiative, highlighting the ongoing effort to bring electricity to families who still live without access to basic utilities. These conversations underscored both the challenges that persist and the innovative, community-driven solutions emerging from within Navajo Nation. Before departing, the class gathered at Cameron Trading Post for lunch and a final reflection on the experiences and lessons of this year.
Final Reflections: Carrying the Lessons Forward
As Explore Class 5 looked back on its time in the Navajo Nation, two undeniable themes emerged repeatedly: the extraordinary generosity and hospitality of the people who welcomed us, and the enduring impact of historical injustices that continue to shape present-day realities.
Throughout the trip, our cohort encountered visionary leaders who are masterfully honoring their culture while building sustainable pathways toward a stronger future. These lessons will undoubtedly influence how Class 5 leads in their own organizations, neighborhoods, and communities long after the program concludes.
